Ticking could have been from the cam lobes or lifters.
Bearing shells are fairly hard to source.

Go with an x-ring chain from a major manufacturer, rated for 1000cc plus and you cant go wrong.

If you are going to try to find another set of R forks make sure they are from the 85/86 model.
The 84 R forks are not interchangeable. Nothing is the same as the later two years.

The 84 model had different length fork tubes.
Max, of the five sets of 1000R legs I've stripped, three were assembled incorrectly by previous owners. Mainly the alignment of the oil lock piece in the bottom of each leg.

The equal length tubes are from the 85 and 85 model 1000R, the part centrecode is MJ4. 51410-MJ4-671 for right tube, 51510-MJ4-671 for left tube. The unequal length tubes are the 84 model and the part number will be something like 51410-MB6-611. The later model does indeed have an inset drain bolt. ...
