Any known issues with 1986 VF1000R?

Looking for some mechanical advice or sharing your own tales of the workshop wonder.

I am new to this board as of yesterday and this is my first post.

I am purchasing my first motorcycle, so I chose a bike from my childhood that I liked because it was used and cheap. I purchased a 1986 VF1000R from eBay about 2 days ago. Item number: 130237367403 if anyone wants to see it.

Please no comments if I overpaid. I really don't care because I liked it.

However, I do not know if there are any known issues with this bike. I have not seen any that are common with this particular model on any message boards, but searching this is difficult. I will be driving it from Colorado Springs to Fort Worth Texas on Tuesday, so any quick help would be great.

Welcome to the Group.

The weak spots in this bike (IMHO) are the weight of this bike compared to the frame and suspension. It does not handle anything like a CBR/GSXR/YZF. As a newbie, be very careful at slow speeds. It is heavy!! Until you get it home and do a proper inspection and maintenance, avoid the temptation for high speeds.

I think a number of people have experienced headshake at slow speeds, so keep both hands on the bars.

As soon as possible, I would change all the fluids. Before you make the trip, be sure to check tire pressure (32 front 42 rear, from memory). If the tire are more than 3-4 years old, you might wish to replace them. Old tires don't stick as well even if the tread is good.

It looks like you bought a very nice condition bike and paid a fair price for it. I think it's worth it to pay more for better condition. I'm with you, it's yours now! Enjoy it.

Lots... but they are a still a great bike. Way better than anything from the other brands of that era.

the '86s were supposed to have some updates to the controls, wiring or something from the '85s i believe... Jamie??

What about the '85's.
Do the R's have the top end oiling problems that the F's seem to have?

Oh my goodness yes. In fact, the R's were particularly affected because they have the highest lift (which means the most contact stress) of any of the VF's. Contrary to Internet myths, the R's had absolutely nothing done to correct the problem.

Pretty much the VF1000R is in the same boat as the rest of teh VF line when it comes to issues. Regulator/rectifiers, fuel pumps, suspension, etc. About the only thing they don't have is trouble with cam chain tensioners!

Sheesh! It seems to have more issues than my old BSA A65!
I suppose most of these issues can be overcome with modern technology?
What is involved in curing the top end prob?

Looks good.
I should have known running one of these things wasn't going to be as simple as just filling up the fuel tank and away I go!
It's amazing what you learn after you've bought something and start doing some serious research.
